Overview

Canada head to the 2026 World Cup as co-hosts, riding a remarkable surge in the country's football culture that has seen the sport grow exponentially in popularity. The Canadian Men's National Team qualified for their first World Cup in 36 years in 2022 and, despite not winning a match in Qatar, the experience was invaluable for a young squad. As co-hosts in 2026, Canada will not need to qualify, allowing them to focus entirely on preparation for a tournament that represents the biggest sporting event in Canadian history. Alphonso Davies is the undeniable star, a left-back whose explosive speed and attacking ability at Bayern Munich have made him one of the most exciting defenders in world football. His journey from a Ghanaian refugee camp in Buduburam to global football stardom is one of the sport's most inspiring stories. Jonathan David provides a reliable goal-scoring threat, having established himself as one of the most prolific strikers in Ligue 1 at Lille. Cyle Larin offers additional attacking options, while Tajon Buchanan provides pace and directness on the wing. In midfield, Stephen Eustaquio brings composure and tactical awareness. The Canadian squad lacks the depth of traditional World Cup powers, but home advantage, the growing quality of their European-based contingent, and the boundless enthusiasm of the Canadian public could combine to produce memorable performances. Expectations must be managed carefully, but reaching the knockout rounds would be a historic achievement that could permanently elevate the sport's status in the country.

World Cup History

Canada's World Cup history is limited, having qualified only twice before 2026: in 1986, where they lost all three group-stage matches without scoring, and in 2022, where they again exited in the group stage but showed considerable improvement. As co-hosts in 2026, this will be their third World Cup appearance. Canada's greatest international achievement in recent years was winning the 2000 CONCACAF Gold Cup.
