World Cup 2026 Schedule & Key Dates: Complete Calendar

The 2026 FIFA World Cup spans 39 days and features 104 matches across 16 venues in three countries. Whether you are planning travel, scheduling time off work, or just want to know when the biggest matches happen, here is the complete calendar with every key date, phase, and venue for the tournament.

Opening Match — June 11, 2026

The tournament kicks off at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City, making it the first stadium in history to host matches at three different World Cups (1970, 1986, and 2026). The opening match will feature Mexico as the home side, with the opponent determined by the group draw. Opening ceremonies will precede the match, celebrating the cultures of all three host nations. Expect a capacity crowd of over 87,000 and a global television audience in the hundreds of millions.

Group Stage — June 11 to June 27

The group stage runs for 17 days and comprises 72 matches (12 groups of 4, with 6 matches per group). On peak days, up to six or eight matches will be played simultaneously across different venues and time zones. Each team plays three group matches with at least three rest days between fixtures.

Matches will be distributed across all 16 venues during the group stage, with games in the United States, Mexico, and Canada running concurrently. Time zone differences between Vancouver (Pacific) and the East Coast venues mean matches could span a window from noon to midnight local time.

The final matchday of each group will see both matches kick off simultaneously to prevent any advantage — a rule in place since the "Disgrace of Gijón" incident at the 1982 World Cup. By June 27, all 12 groups will be settled, and the 32 teams advancing to the knockout stage will be confirmed.

Round of 32 — June 28 to July 3

The newly introduced Round of 32 features 16 knockout matches over three days. This is the first elimination stage, where the top 2 from each group plus the 8 best third-placed teams are paired off. Matches ending in a draw after 90 minutes go to extra time and penalties. Expect high-profile matchups as group winners face third-placed qualifiers, and runners-up face each other. All matches will be played at US venues.

Round of 16 — July 4 to July 7

The Round of 16 takes place over three days, with eight matches whittling the field to the final eight. The July 4 matches in the United States will coincide with American Independence Day, creating a unique atmosphere if the USMNT is still in the competition. By this stage, the tournament is concentrated at the larger US venues — expect sell-out crowds exceeding 70,000 at every match.

Quarter-Finals — July 9 to July 11

Four matches over three days, with the quarter-finals spread across July 9 to 11. These are traditionally the most dramatic matches of any World Cup — when the remaining eight teams are all high-quality and every tie feels like a final. The quarter-final venues are Gillette Stadium (Boston), SoFi Stadium (Los Angeles), Hard Rock Stadium (Miami), and Arrowhead Stadium (Kansas City).

Semi-Finals — July 14 to July 15

The two semi-finals will be played on consecutive days at premier US venues. The semi-finals will be played at AT&T Stadium in Dallas (July 14) and Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta (July 15). These matches determine who will play for the ultimate prize — and who will settle for the third-place play-off.

Third-Place Match & Final — July 18 to July 19

The third-place match takes place on July 18, one day before the final. While often considered a consolation, this match can produce memorable performances from teams with nothing to lose.

The 2026 World Cup Final is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey — just outside New York City. With a capacity of 82,500, MetLife Stadium will be the stage for the crowning moment of the biggest World Cup in history. The venue is accessible from Manhattan via public transit and sits in the heart of the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area, the largest media market in the United States.

Planning Tips for Fans

If you are traveling to matches, book accommodation early — host cities will see massive demand, especially during the knockout rounds. Consider the time zones when planning your schedule: West Coast venues (Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles) are three hours behind East Coast venues (New York, Philadelphia, Miami). For those watching from home, the return to a traditional summer schedule means most matches will air during afternoon and evening hours in the Americas and late evening in Europe — a significant improvement over Qatar's midday kick-offs for European viewers.
