Overview

Senegal enter the 2026 World Cup as the reigning African champions and one of the strongest teams the continent has ever produced. The Lions of Teranga won the Africa Cup of Nations in 2022, defeating Egypt on penalties in the final, and claimed a second AFCON title in 2025, cementing their status as Africa's dominant force. They followed up with a solid showing at the 2022 World Cup before a round-of-16 exit to England. Led by the talismanic Sadio Mane, who continues to captain the side with distinction, Senegal remain a formidable force thanks to their deep pool of talent playing across Europe's top leagues. Ismaila Sarr provides pace and directness in the attack, while Nicolas Jackson has established himself as a capable striker at Chelsea with his movement and finishing ability. Idrissa Gueye continues to be the midfield engine, providing tireless energy and defensive stability that allows the team's more creative players to flourish. Kalidou Koulibaly's experience and leadership at the back remain invaluable, and Edouard Mendy is a reliable presence in goal. Senegal's strength lies in their physicality, pace on the counter-attack, and the team spirit that has been cultivated over years of success under coach Aliou Cisse. The style is direct and powerful, built on strong defensive organization and rapid transitions through wide areas. Senegal's football infrastructure has improved dramatically, and the nation's investment in youth development continues to produce talented players who move to European clubs at a young age. As Africa's top-ranked team, Senegal will carry the hopes of an entire continent.

World Cup History

Senegal's most memorable World Cup appearance was their debut in 2002, when they stunned defending champions France 1-0 in the opening match and reached the quarterfinals. They qualified again in 2018, narrowly missing the round of 16 on fair play rules in a controversial tiebreaker, and returned in 2022, where they reached the round of 16 before losing to England. Senegal have qualified for three World Cup tournaments in total.
