Overview
Scotland are one of the oldest footballing nations in the world, having played in the first-ever international match against England in 1872, and their passionate Tartan Army support is renowned worldwide. Scottish football has experienced a revival with the national team qualifying for Euro 2020 and Euro 2024 after decades of absence from major tournaments. The squad features several players at top Premier League clubs, providing genuine quality. Scotland play an intense, pressing style with an emphasis on energy and aggression. Their challenge remains translating passionate performances in qualifying into results at tournament finals, where they have historically struggled.

World Cup History
Scotland have appeared at eight World Cups: 1954, 1958, 1974, 1978, 1982, 1986, 1990, and 1998. Remarkably, they have never progressed beyond the group stage despite some close calls, most notably in 1978 when they needed a large victory against the Netherlands and won 3-2 but fell short on goal difference. Scotland have not appeared at a World Cup since 1998.
